One of the aspects of your LASIK eye surgery procedure that will be discussed with you during your pre-operative consultation is what to do after LASIK surgery to ensure your chances of a safe recovery. Knowing what NOT to do can be just as helpful in trying to avoid complications and enjoy a smooth recovery.
Read on as the team at Laser Eye Center of Miami sheds light on a few key things not to do after LASIK.
Rub Your Eyes
It is very important that you refrain from rubbing or touching your eyes in the days following LASIK. This helps ensure that the surface of your eye heals correctly and quickly. If you get an eyelash or a speck of dust in your eyes, you can use artificial tears to flush out the debris.
You will receive special eyewear to wear while sleeping for about a week after surgery. Wearing these goggles will prevent you from inadvertently rubbing or touching your eyes.
Get Your Eyes Wet
Along the same lines, you must refrain from getting your eyes wet for about a week after surgery. You can take showers and baths, but be careful not to let water splash in your eyes. Stay out of swimming pools, hot tubs and the ocean for about a week.
Participate in Vigorous Activities or Exercise
You are welcome to enjoy light, low-impact exercise as soon as the day after LASIK surgery. But avoid any type of exercise or activity that could put you at risk of getting sweat in your eyes or having something (e.g., sporting or exercise equipment) make sudden contact with your eyes.
Wear Eye Makeup
Stay away from eye makeup for the first week after LASIK, or else you could risk getting flakes of eyeshadow or mascara in your healing eyes.
Miss Your Postoperative Appointments.
You will have check-up visits with your LASIK surgeon after your surgery. During these appointments, the doctor will examine your eyes to ensure they are healing properly, and they will clear you to resume all of your normal activities. Do your best not to miss these very important follow-ups.
