By the time you reach middle age, you will likely begin to notice that you are having increased difficulty reading or seeing objects up close. This age-induced farsightedness is known as presbyopia, and it affects over 1 billion people worldwide. Although you cannot take steps to prevent presbyopia, there are solutions to keep you seeing properly in spite of the condition. The team of professionals at Laser Eye Center of Miami explains here:
Prescription Eyewear
When signs of presbyopia start to manifest, many patients’ first instinct is to go for glasses or contact lenses to correct their vision. If relying on contacts or remembering to bring glasses when you leave the house does not bother you, then it may be the best solution for you. Bear in mind, however, that since presbyopia is a gradual deterioration of your vision, you will likely have to update your vision prescription more frequently than you have had to in the past.
LASIK
LASIK has become an increasingly popular way to address presbyopia because it allows patients to read text such as the newspaper without needing to grab reading glasses.
At your consultation, ask the doctor about Monovision LASIK, which corrects your dominant eye while leaving the other eye somewhat nearsighted. Although this procedure will sacrifice a moderate amount of quality in your distance vision, your newly regained ability to see things up close is typically considered a worthy compromise.
Refractive Lens Exchange
Another surgical solution is RLE which involves your doctor removing your existing (natural) lens from the eye and inserting an artificial lens in its place. Although this method is more commonly used to treat cataracts, it is also successful at reducing farsightedness and either eliminating or cutting down on your need for reading glasses.
Laser Eye Center of Miami carries two types of multifocal intraocular lenses: Tecnis and Symfony. During a consultation, our experts will be happy to discuss which — if either — is appropriate to improve your vision for the long term.
